The carbon group, also known as group 14, group Ⅳ, or the tetrels, consists of six elements on the periodic table. These elements are carbon (C), silicon (Si), germanium (Ge), tin (Sn), lead (Pb), and flerovium (Fl). Carbon, being the lightest element in the group, is a reactive nonmetal. Silicon and germanium are classified as metalloids, as they possess properties of both metals and nonmetals. Tin and lead are post-transition metals, as they exhibit metallic properties. Flerovium, on the other hand, is the only element in the carbon group that is synthetic.
These elements are located in the p-block of the periodic table. One notable characteristic of the carbon group elements is that they all have four electrons in their outermost shell.
